Lupin's Intellectual Property Management Group (IPMG) works in conjunction with the research team and marketing to identify lucrative opportunities and put in place a well-differentiated, value-based product pipeline, with a strong accent on controlled release, exclusive and unique first-to-file and well thought out niche filings. During FY 2008-09, the Company filed a record 28 ANDAs, with as many as 5 first-to-files opportunities, of which 2 were exclusive first-to-files. Lupin's cumulative filings stand at 90, with 34 approvals to date, addressing an estimated market size of US$ 90 Bn. IPMG has also led the identification of products in the Oral Contraceptives and Ophthalmic space which the Company has since put into its development pipeline. The Company has already completed 7 OC ANDA filings in FY 2008-09.

IPMG is also accountable for patenting Lupin's inventions and leading patent challenges across the globe and FY 2008-09 was a landmark year indeed.
During FY 2008-09, the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals entered a landmark judgement in Lupin's favor which led the Company to win the Cefdinir litigation against Abbott Laboratories and Astellas Pharma Inc. The Company also settled its litigation relating to Desloratadine tablets, the Generic version of Schering-Plough's Clarinex® tablets. As per the terms of the settlement, Lupin received license to the relevant Desloratadine patent, and is free to launch its Generic Desloratadine product, on July 1, 2012, or earlier in certain circumstances.
During the course of the year, Lupin filed 38 Formulations patents, 26 API patents and 5 NCE patents. It also received approval for 7 Formulations patents, 4 API patents and 4 NCE patents in the year.
